Publisher’s Weekly Gives Madame Presidentess a Positive Review!

An “intriguing…dramatic story of struggle”

Short version of the review-y parts:

“Evelina’s intriguing account of Victoria Woodhull—spiritualist, suffragette, stockbroker, and politician—deftly extols the many “firsts” of this 19th-century feminist trailblazer…Evelina moves assuredly through the many layers of Victoria’s colorful life; such potent issues as family torment, marital abuse, and female subjugation all are linked in this dramatic story of struggle.”  

The rest of the review is mainly a summary of what the book is about.

This is a HUGE deal for an indie author like me because it’s very hard for us to get the major publishing publications – of which Publisher’s Weekly and Kirkus are the most widely respected – to review indie books. I’m proud to say this review was not paid for in any way.

What Makes Me Laugh Out Loud

I admit it. I’m an easy audience. I laugh easily and LOT. But I don’t have the traditional sense of humor that present society seems to dictate. I can’t stand Will Farrell most of the time (okay, I do love Pearl the Landlord, but that’s more about the little girl) and I hate the gross out immature humor of Judd Apatow and his crew. I have a very dry sense of humor. Maybe it comes from being raised on Mel Brooks movies.

Some things that make me LOL:

  • Snark – which should be obvious if you’ve read Been Searching for You. I blame Clueless.
  • Those memes where people rename animals or ordinary objects. I laugh so hard, I cry.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

  • Anything Jeff Dunham does with Peanut. Peanut is my hero.
  • This ridiculously stupid video that has become a running joke at my day job:
  • And this stupid one as well. I love all of Bad Lip Reading, but this one is classic.
  • The minions. I am eternally a 12 year old.

Three Books Nominated for the Midwest Book Awards!

Can you tell we are in the height of contest season? That seems to be all I talk about here anymore. That will change, I promise. But not today.

I’m over the moon because THREE of my books are finalists in the Midwest Book Awards. What’s more, Daughter of Destiny and Camelot’s Queen are two of the three finalists in the fantasy category! Been Searching for You is a finalist in the romance category.

We will find out who wins on May 12.

Grinning like a fool, but I do love my awards.

Yes, I’m still here. Quick update for everyone.

What I’ve been doing

  1. Traveling to the Chanticleer Author’s Conference (see photo) and visiting Seattle (OMG, that Pike’s Place Market…I would give anything to have something like that here!).
  2. Writing on The Once and Future Queen, my debut non-fiction book tracing the evolution of the character of Guinevere from her Celtic roots to today.
  3. Auditioning actresses to narrate the audio book version of Madame Presidentess.

Award updates

  • Daughter of Destiny and Been Searching for You took home Silver in their categories at the Independent Book Publishers Association’s (IBPA) Benjamin Franklin Awards last weekend.
  • Camelot’s Queen won First in Category (Mythic and Legendary Fantasy) in the Ozma Awards, sponsored by Chanticleer Reviews.
  • Camelot’s Queen and Been Searching for You are both nominees for In D’Tale Magazine’s RONE Awards. Voting starts Monday and I need your help to get into the finals. Look for a post on Monday with directions on how to vote.

Two Award Wins – No April Fools Joke

I have two happy announcements that are no joke!

I found out this morning that Been Searching for You took third place over all categories in the Lyra Awards for Fiction!

Tonight at the Chanticleer Author’s Conference, Camelot’s Queen took home first in category in the Ozma Awards for Fantasy.

Needless to say, it’s been a great day!

I just found out that Camelot’s Queen is a Foreword Indies Book of the Year finalist in the Fantasy category! There were 2,200 titles submitted in 65 categories. Winners will be announced June 24!
